OUESTION ABOUT THE W & P

I just spent the weekend at my daughters place in Salem, Oregon and was listening to the scanner and heard the northbound train on Sunday morning toneing the UP dispatcher to enter the UP main track just south of Salem for a northbound movement.

Why was this train using the UP rather than their own track to run to Portland. I know the UP from Salem is probably a faster track but just seems kind of strange since P&W has a connection to the UP closer to Portland.
