BNSF running 1x2 DPU configuration?

Twice now in the past two weeks I have seen a BNSF southbound manifest leaving Tacoma with a single Dash-9 on the point and 2 dpu's shoving on the rear. This seems counterintuitive. Have they been doing this long? Both units were online on the rear on the 2nd one I saw. Seems to me it would make more sense to be 2x1 for train handling and backup in the event the lead conked out?

Can you run the rear units remote with the lead unit(s) offline?
