The Need for HEP and DPUs

The diesel in this case was for head-end power (electricity) for the train. Sure it's a reliability thing too. And in some cases (not the 4449 as I understand it) the steam engine may not be up to the task.

DPUs (Distributed Power Units) balance the load. The first coupler on the first freight car without DPUs must take the force of the whole train. Couplers break. Radio controlled DPUs allow longer trains. The train on the bridge in my picture seems well over powered however, even for the Oregon Trunk. DPUs can also be mid-train. TRAINS magazine did an article on the concept including how DPUs help avoid derailments of long trains on curves.
