To add to Drew's response re:SD38's...#36 suffered electrical problems back in 2005 and has not operated since. The railroad cannibalized it for parts. The #37 and #38 alternated up to the end, depending on which one started each morning (for a long time the #38 was the only operational locomotive, until the last engineer got the #37 running again in his down time, and it closed out operations...just in time, as the #38 was about laid up). The deal involving the #39 was a pre-arranged transaction...McCloud sold the unit to the equipmet company, who traded it to UP for five switchers. McCloud delivered the unit directly to the UP, who used it in helper service out of Dunsmuir for a few weeks before sending it south for paint.
