I like the photo for a few reasons: The E8/9's, the paint on the E's, the fact that there are three E's, the "rainbow" era train Eastern style and the feeling of speed on that elevated curve.
I remember taking elevation out of curves after losing passenger trains. The new chart called for a maximum of 4" but we had 5 1/2" in some curves. I think I recall seeing up to 6" on ATSF curves in the seventies. While it's true that the low rail takes a beating in curves when heavy trains traverse at slow speeds another major concern is stringlining.
