Everbody has pretty much figured out the details. I always understood the 2-6-6-2 was the A&MR mallet when it still belonged to Hammond. The bridge trashing was somewhere above Crannel on what was left of the Big Lagoon trackage but hard to tell where. The closest trackage got to Orick was above Big Lagoon, but trackage topped the ridge into the Redwood Creek basin on the west side of what is now Redwood National Park. Some of this movie was filmed in Carlotta and some of the rail shots could have been PL or Carson trackage that was still there in the early 1950's. Some of the "drama" scenes were filmed in the Orick area. There's an outstanding piece of footage early in the film of Kirk Douglas and the Carlotta Hotel, which unfortunately burned about 20 years ago after serving as a dinner house and was being remodeled into some sort of B&B when fire occurred.
The interesting thing about this film is there were three remakes........the Kirk Douglas one being the last. The first one was silent....1923 I believe. The second one was 1938 or so. The silent film has lots of NWP and Samoa action. Can't recall much of the 1938 version. The two earlier releases are not available. The 1923 silent has been featured at the Minor Theatre in Arcata in recent years to the music of a live piano player.
