Not too surprising as Hammond had a lot of spurs and logged the area north and east of Eureka extensively for the
years that they were active before the fire.
When I worked for Gus Peterson in '72 at Klamath, he got a wild hair up his butt one day
and took me to The Gap where the 17 had sat for many years...he was certain he'd missed a
lot of parts and such. Turned out to be wild goose chase, but we did load a single stage
compressor into the back of his p/u. It took us over two hours to dig a depression so he
could back the truck low enough where we could use a chain fall to skid it up into the
back. With a life spent in the woods, he had this all figured out and was several steps ahead
of me all day. You ought to have seen the glint in his eye when we left there. He was a
real character.
The Gap still shows up on modern maps, I wonder what's left there now or if you can even get
in there anymore.
