Tom is getting overload on this topic......but Capdiamont brings up a good point about the proposed SP coastal line that was never built above Trinidad. I think SP dropped the idea about 1933 as the Depression deepened. A map does exist of the SP survey and it is used for title and property searches. Parts of Highway 101 in and north of Orick was the railroad survey and many title documents in the Orick area show Southern Pacific as an adjacent property owner. A fence line cutting across the Orick Valley from the Redwood National Park visitor Center to the back wall of the Palm Motel and Cafe mark the proposed SP line.
I'm pretty sure the tree that Kirk Douglas falls on the old man's house in the 1952 version was one of the scenes shot in the Orick area.
