Iv'e always camped in Cheney, Wa, about 10 miles west of Spokane when in the area. Although it's a little ways away from Sandpoint, it's still a fair drive. Cheney is a college town, and most of the eateries are reasonably priced for the youngsters, and most of the restaurants I visit are trackside!
I use the campsite on the south side of the road between Cheney and Babb to the west of town. For some reason I cannot find the name of the place, but if you like sleeping close to the tracks, this is the place. I usually will use this campsite as a base, and set out on day trips from there. Cheap, Cheap Cheap! RV's welcome.
Another way to keep costs down is to bring a cooler and visit the supermarket. You can pick up many snacks and there is usually a deli of some sorts. If you happen upon a Safeway, you can get warm meals "to go", and it would be healthier than most fast food (you order a "Number Two Meal", what do you expect?)
