UP train counts as seen during daylight have had extreme ups and downs lately. Two recent factors playing into it have been UP trackwork north of Sandpoint (6-hour windows on some days) and BNSF "curfews" where no UP's are allowed across BNSF in Spokane due to track work there. Just in the past week or so, I've noticed daytime action on the UP north of Spokane be as few as three trains (plus locals round trip) between sunup and sundown, or as much as six or seven trains (plus locals round trip) between sunup and sundown. Yes, that guy did have the misfortune of passing through the Idaho panhandle on about the one day we've seen since June where there wasn't blue sky and blistering sunshine. Oh, and as for BNSF train counts, it's still not fall rush (and I don't think this year's rush is going to set any records), but just this past Saturday during about four hours at Granite we got 12 trains during the "slow" period of early afternoon. When talking Sandpoint, one should never forget POVA. Last Thurday's train couldn't even get into Sandpoint's Boyer yard because UP had things all tied up. So Friday's run started right at Dover, where the POVA train was idling and waiting in fantastic morning light when the MHKET-B rolled past. Took the B-train almost an hour to do his work in town and clear out before POVA moved past Dover. But by the time POVA started west he had more than 50 cars in tow.
