I'm not a Photoshop user so I don't know if this exists (probably does, in a plugin if not in the Real Thing), but in ACD Canvas you can open the Levels tool and use either the white or the black dropper: click on something in the photo that's supposed to be white or black respectively and get instant color correction. Of course if nothing is white or black you have a problem ... get it close then tweak?

The photo at the head of this thread is pretty close to right on already, but the Levels trick did make it pop a little more in a quick test. I chose a dark shadow on the black locomotive as the reference point.
