BNSF onto UP Boyer to Athol? Perhaps some local or state officials pipe-dreamed that one, but it's not part of the Bridging the Valley plan and would not be welcomed by BNSF. Doing so would have BNSF give up a well-engineered, mostly double-track main line between Sandpoint and Athol (it's single-track only from Sandpoint Junction across the big bridge, and alongside Lake Cocolalla) in exchange for UP's slower, twisting, single-track route. Doubletracking that stretch of UP would not help things much, except to expedite UP's own traffic. It would not be enough to handle BNSF's. The BTV plan calls for UP to share right of way on a new track laid alongside BNSF between the Spokane Valley and Athol. Roger, I had the joy of showing Steve Patterson around the Sandpoint area recently during one of his Grand Luxe layovers, and he too was a bit surprised at the ability to see MRLs across the lake. Up by the signal bridge at the junction, we saw what looked like a westbound over at Hope, and binoculars confirmed it. And my eyes aren't what they used to be!
