I've also found that a lot of those sites (including the LA Times) let you in once, then demand registration for later articles. That's often a function of cookies saved in your computer. Clear your cookies before clicking on the link (a one-click move with Firefox and, I think, the latest IE) and the LA Times at least will keep showing you articles without registering. You usually have to allow cookies and javascript to see the article, but you don't have to keep them afterward.
