This is indeed a tragedy for the young woman, the family and the railroaders. A good friend of mine was an engineer who hit a car with six kids in it - the entire graduating class of a small town who were out partying, drinking, and celebrating their surviving 12 years of school. They all died. He retired shortly thereafter, and died himself a year later. I suspect the two were related. Never underestimate the emotional toll such accidents have on the train crew.

I was hoboing across the US when I was 18, and riding a Pennsy freight sitting in an open box car with my legs hanging out the door opening, having the time of my life. The train stopped, and the conductor came walking along the train and said to me: "If you want to keep those legs, keep them inside the car." 'Enuf said. I gave up train-hopping after that trip.
