I think the matter of bus vs. light rail is overblown. In 2005, when I was in Portland for the NRHS Convention, I made good use of the LRT system and also checked out the Portland Streetcar. Both were very cool.
In 2007, I made another trip to Oregon, this time to ride the EmX Bus Rapid Transit line in Eugene. Awesome!
I love light rail in many cities, commute rail such as CalTrain, MetroNorth and the South Shore Line, the Chicago "L", New York City subways, the Washington Metro, cable cars, electric trolley buses, busways, on-street bus rapid transit, ferries and inclined planes and even the prosaic local diesel bus.
I reject the view that public transportation investments hurts neighborhoods. Highways thrust through the tight confines of urban areas so that commuters can repeatedly drive back-and-forth in their cars with traffic erupting onto local streets causes far more damage to neighborhoods.
