I believe that this line was originally used by the Santa Fe to reach their branch lines on the east side via trackage rights on the SP main and then on the branch that headed towards Porterville. Santa Fe got back on their own tracks just south of Porterville.

These branch lines also connected to the Santa Fe main in Fresno and also via a line that went west through Tulare.
