I really got to know Jim after he retired. I think a statement on the impression he left on the road crews was the siding was put in six years after he retired. The road crews wanted it named after him. Also when word got out that the person working on 3420 was talking to Jim the older hands would come by and ask me to tell him that they said hello. When a former SP official who worked for the FRA stopped by Grand Canyon he was really surprised that the tourist Railroad had someone there who knew Jim.
Jim told me about how he dealt with his supervisors and worked with is road crews. It took a lot of his time and he said when he retired he came home to kids that were grown and gone and a wife he barely knew. She passed away three short years latter and it really affected him. His memory often reminds me that family and friends are truly what are important.
