A great article in the Kalmbach Locomotive 2011 by Kyle Wisemann-Yee and Scott Lothes details the last days of the SW-1500's on the Oregon City Switcher as it switched the Blue Heron paper mill in Oregon City, OR.
The nail in the coffin came today in the form of an auction notice and catalog from Blackmon Auctioneers listing 38 SW-1500's, one SD40-T2 and a slug that will be auctioned off on October 12th at East St. Louis.
Once the gavel drops, these units will see new homes on shortlines, industrials or worse, parted out for their valuable components.
An end of an era for those of us who remember the "cruds" seemingly overnight displacing all of the other switchers on the property. They lived a long and successful lives as probably the finest switch engine ever made (except for maybe the Alco C-415's LOL!).
