Re: Goodbye Old Friends...SP/UP SW-1500's vs. MP15 Questions
Shortline Sammie can verify this, but I believe one distinct advantage was the shorter wheelbase which made them desirable on the Oregon City job out of Portland. The MP15AC is longer than the SW1500.
I have limited experience on both models and I preferred the SW1500 over the MP15AC. Forward visibility was obstructed on either type because of the hood, but worse on the MP15AC's. Also I hated the vertical steps and cramped front porch design on the MP15AC's. When crossing over to the opposite side, you had to turn sideways because the walkway is half as wide as the SW1500's. Ironic they are called headlights because I always feared hitting my head on the headlight assembly.
The MP15AC's I was familiar with had the handbrake wheel halfway down the hood. Whoever thought of that should be shot. The SW1500's had the recessed ratchet type. You had to be careful you didn't run into brake wheel at night. As for sheer performance comparisons, I'm not qualified to answer that. OPRRMS would know.
I just found a photo showing everything I described here
