I agree with you about the article. I'll admit that prior to reading the article, I didn't pay much attention to the SP & UP SW-1500s. I never called them cruds, but when I saw them on the SP, I thought they were ugly compared to the EMD switchers with the more rounded cabs like the NW-2Es. My indifference towards them continued in the UP days.
I had no idea that crews preferred these locomotives to others for switching assignments.
But now that they are no longer operating on the UP, the line from a Joni Mitchell song "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" seems to be too true.
