My good friend, Larry Fredeen (known by the handle of "SP Loop Conductor") who, in the early 1980's was a Brakeman for SP in the LA Area in freight service, got a call one day to be the Rear Brakeman from LA to San Luis Obispo and back on Amtrak's Coast Starlight, SP Train #13 & SP Train #12. At the time, Larry told the crew caller he had no Passenger Uniform. The caller asked if he could dress up nice, as if he was going to a Wedding. So he said sure and he did. He is very glad, as he never worked in Amtrak service ever again in his career. Another example was when Caltrain #101, #102, #103 & #104 (that actually ran as "Extra" trains on SP) between October 1982 and March 1983. Many crews were called for these trains and if the crew had an Amtrak Uniform, they were told to wear that. If they didn't regular clothes were just fine. Usually the Brakeman on these runs had no uniform, so all they did were operate the doors, grab the train orders on the fly at Burbank Jct. (going west) and just basically rode along while the conductor collected all the tickets. Nowadays on UP staffed Metra Commuter Trains out of Chicago, if your records show you do NOT have a Passenger Uniform that conforms to Metra's standards, you can NOT be called for Passenger Service working a revenue UP Metra train. On BNSF staffed Metra trains in Chicago, I understand there are certain exceptions made regarding Passenger Uniforms, but this is an extreme EXCEPTION, rather than the rule.
