I've not spoke much at all about this venture, but since the book is indeed now delivered from the printer, I'll say this...it is an all color effort showcasing the work of both John Hungerford and Harold Stewart. While in no way is there any claim that it completely covers the SP in those last few years of steam, it does cover quite a bit, including chapters on the Nacozari and the narrow gauge. There is even a chapter on interchange roads which to me, is the most interesting of all. There is some really obscure color in it.
I provided over 90% of the slides from my collection. At one time, my name was on the cover as author, but I was not comfortable with that, so I believe that it is billed as an SP Historical & Technical Society effort. Joe Dale Morris of Austin, TX did the layout work.
There are some very nice action views of commutes, but this was never intended to be all-encompasing on any one facet of the SP. Enjoy it for what it is, an all color look of the SP over a lot of territory showing many different types of steam power, not just the oft photographed Cab-Forwards and GS types. This also shows up on the cover painting as it is of
an F-1 2-10-2 in the Valley.
I railfanned with Hungerford once, on a McCloud winter trip and knew Stewart from early correspondence going back to the 60's. Virgil & LaVada Staff gave me Hungerfords slide collection back around 1994...it contained 6900 original Kodachromes. I have Stan Kistler to thank for what I have of Stewarts work.
