Google Search Methods - Tips?

I do not have much luck with google searches.

If I search a topic, such as railroads in DeKalb Ill, google parses the search field and gives first page search results that include real estate in DeKalb GA.

I assume googles priority is returning clickable or viewable results that google can get a fee for. Fine, google needs to make money to keep the free search service going.

My question: are there any tricks, punctuation, boolean algebra and etc. that can kinda weigh the search results in my favor?

tks
