I had heard that Menk was not a big fan of the service, which spurred some of my curiosity of the matter, but I did not know that there was a two year delay implementing the merger. Early BN photos clearly indicate a haste to 'patch' lettering/numbers on power with old heralds removed.

Got the year wrong about Amtrak...thought it was May of '70!

I'm sort of considering the idea that perhaps not a whole lot of the passenger equipment was repainted, and maybe the equipment was widely photographed by railfans...making it seem in 2011 that there was a lot of it painted up. Considering the early days of Amtrak, I note a large amount of pre-BN paint schemes in the consist of Amtrak trains.
