I rode a number of the GN, NP, SP&S, and CBQ trains in 1966-68 because I was going back and forth between home in California and school on the East Coast. They were operated to a high standard (comparable to Santa Fe which I also rode). Whatever Menk's attitude toward passenger trains, I suspect he had more pressing issues to deal with immediately after the merger. I do not remember riding any of the trains during thier BN operation. But I seem to remember a variety of paint scheems. In addition to the old GN, NP, SPS, and CBQ, the GN had started painting their fleet to "Sky Blue", so once cars started getting painted BN green there were six different paint schemes in the BN fleet.
