One of my first memories of San Jose's Cahill Station was when my parents decided to take the Suntan. We were walking up the subway ramp to the platform when the train was arriving from SF. My dad lifted me up to see the arrival just as the Daylight painted GS pulled in. This was probably 1952 or '53. I also remember trading the GS for doubleheaded steam at Watsonville Jct. and riding the open platform observation car. There was also a band that greeted the train at the Boardwalk. We took this train a number of times until it was discontinued in the early '60's. The fare was cheap and it was a fun way to visit the beach. If memory serves(it's been letting me down a lot lately) there was often a reserved car for newscarriers who had sold enough subscriptions to receive a free ticket. I think the Oakland Tribune was among the papers who did this. Also, sometimes the Conductor wouldn't let riders on the open platform between Watsonville Jct. and Santa Cruz due to the possibility of injuries from plants and trees that overgrew the right of way. Some Conductors didn't care. I know there was a movement to reopen this line for beach trains about 15 years ago. Too bad it didn't happen.
