The explosion at Port Chicago in 1944 that killed 320 men instantly remains a blight on the history of the United States because of the way the Navy and the Govt treated the survivors.
The "black" sailors that refused to load ammunition after the incident were threatened with DEATH by firing squad by the Admiral of the 12th Naval District for refusing to continue the process of loading ammunition in extremely dangerous conditions. (This is B.S.)
I would have refused the order as well.

As "Dick" in this opening thread hinted, this was a chronic racism incident in all of its glory!!
