Some bridges are designed to withstand the impact of such lateral impacts.
The alternative is building them maybe five feet of higher.
Or owning and storing the replacement
The basic rules of railroad bridge design make them nearly impervious to highway truck damage.
My contribution to this "war": Include cutting edges on all bridges over highways.
The lowest overpass between any two cities shows battle scars.
Watch for them during your next long trip.
Highway maintainers always watch for damage.
