Looking at the picture of the 645 in the attached article, it appears to be a 20 cyl engine. This would be the 3600 hp motor, same as in the SD45. It also appears that the valve covers and the block & crankcase covers are CHROME PLATED! Fancy stuff.

Wonder what they did with the 645's when they pulled them out.

The article didn't say anything about the fuel consumption issues that the RRds had with the 20 cyl 645; only that after 25 years they were "tired" and didn't meet current emissions requirements.

The only 20 cyl EMD engine that made it into a locomotive after the SD45 was the 20-710G3B that went into the 30 SD80MAC's that Conrail received in 1996. No additional SD80MAC's were built.
