OK, real life. There are two MSHA categories in common use today and they are 46 and 48. 48 refers
to above and below ground hard rock mining and concern said activities. 46, which is now being
enforced heavily refers to aggregate operations. Normally a construction company would see little
of an MSHA inspector BUT if the operation is crushing rock to make gravel, sand, road base or
whatever they come under the 46 jurisdiction. An MSHA inspector can at his or her discretion shut
down totally any operation that they feel is unsafe. Unsafe can be an operation at which the
employees AND any person on site are without proper PPE. PPE is personal protective equipment and
includes hard hat, steel toed boots, safety glasses with side shields at the minimum. Vests, masks
and other items may also be required. A trespasser, unknown to the operator, could get the
operation shut down completely and before someone pooh-poohs that, it's happened recently in
Nevada. Maybe this explains a little more about why we should exercise care about where we step.
