The constant bombardment of salt air from the nearby Pacific Ocean did a lot of damage to the locomotive. Add to that the growing liability issues with it and the cable car and it was bound to end. The City actually put SP1294 up for sale, provided the buyer move it off the property. There was only one somwhat serious bid, but when they found out how much it was going to cost to move it, they withdrew the offer and The City had it scrapped.

I also remember it in the fifties and sixties. It was fun to climb around on.
