Tom,
I cannot help with directions, as I have never driven out there, just ridden Amtrak Trains and UP Special Trains through there only, but if you have never been out there before, I will warn you, that to be very careful, there are many places that are not passable, and if you break down or get stuck, there is no Cell Phone coverage and you may possibly go for hours without seeing another human being. If you are unlucky, you might have a visit from a local rattlesnake before you see another human being!
