UP's weekly "State of the Business" report [edited]:
Nov. 21, 2011
"State of the Business" is a weekly update of Union Pacific's network. It provides an overview of the railroad's current status, outlook drivers and new business.
Current Status:
The seven-day carloading rate is around 177,800. This is 3 percent above the same week last year.
About 740 TE&Y employees are furloughed; 23,000 freight cars are in storage; and 740 locomotives are in short- and long-term storage.
Velocity is up 0.1 mph week-over-week to 20 mph.
The Western Region is up 0.8 mph to 24.9 mph, with strong increases on four service units.
The Southern Region is up 0.1 to 16.8 mph, with continued reductions in drought-related slow orders.
The Northern Region is flat at 19.6 mph. Key gaps versus 21-plus mph pre-flood benchmark include coal mix/volume, seasonal QSP202 track renewal, Chicago gateway issues, and a recent derailment interruption on the Kansas subdivision.
The freight car inventory (Operating) is down 1,700 cars week-over-week, which should help further velocity gains.
The Service Delivery Index (SDI) is at 81. SDI combines the key quality-of-service indicators for each business segment.
Compared to November 2010, slow order miles are 2 percent worse
