The 3010 was indeed more-or-less assigned to that train beginning around 1965 (back before it was the 3010). When it was unavailable, whatever Sacramento had available that had a steam generator was used, most commonly an SD7 or SD9. In fact, SD7 #2742 is known to have worked the train while it was still in "Black Widow" paint.
During the latter 1960's, the 3006 was one of four boiler equipped GP9s (3006 thru 3009) assigned to the Los Angeles Passenger Pool, and were more commonly seen on passenger or freight trains than on peninsula commute trains. The 3006 was unique in that at some point in the late Sixties, the clear glass over the train indicators (on both ends) was replaced by the permanent number boards shown in Drew's photo. Sometime after the Amtrak takeover, it and the other three units were reassigned to the San Francisco Commute Pool, and the clear glass was restored, although it did run around in local freight service out of San Jose like that for awhile.
