A caboose by any other name is still a caboose...
At least we still have the opportunity to see this traditional end-of-train classic on a Class 1 railroad, even if it's just in local service.
I remember seeing two BNSF locals while railfanning at the Fullerton depot two years ago and was greatly pleased that not only were they actually on the train, they were still in Santa Fe colors (with GP30s in the "yellowbonnet" freight colors on the other end).
Up here in the Pacific Northwest, both BNSF and UP still run cabooses on some local services. The BNSF cars ae in BN Cascade Green and the UP ones are in Armour Yellow, but there is at least one former SP caboose in use in the Portland area. I often see it parked on the short siding along the Kenton line in the Parkrose neighborhood. It's visible from Interstate 205 and from NE Killingsworth Street (FYI, there is an Oregon DOT traffic webcam at this point that often has views of the UP overpass across I-205 just north of Killingsworth, and if the caboose is there it may be visible).
