I have anecdotal experience the D-Star digital mode has extended range vs. analog. But digital modulated signals are much more spectrum "noisey" than analog. You can see it if you on a Spectrum Analyzer. The Utah VHF Soceity did a study whch shows this.
As for previous obsevations that that there are "bleedover problems" on the present 15kHz channels, it would be interesting to know to what extent they are. Here in Southern California, UP, MetroRail and the San Diego Trolley use DCS and PL tones now that so many channels have been added. BNSF uses them only on the mobile side of their "PBX" pair and the aforementioned intermodal simplex channel.
