EPA, having finally finished (and released a week ago) it's new coal fired power plant regulations, which stand to shutter nearly half of the plants currently operating, is reportedly "taking a second look" at off road combustion sources and is giving serious consideration towards regulation of historic steam and diesel locomotives, short line and regional locomotives. It is also looking at tighter controls on new and overhauled locomotives on class ones. They are currently releasing regulation on farm tractors and farming itself, proposing limits on dust releases during soil tillage and harvest operations. (The farm lobby got some of the regulations postponed last summer, but they are back on the radar at the behest of several enviromental groups.) Enjoy historic steam while you can, coal fired locomotives will be the first to go, and eventually they all will probably be doomed. Take lots of pictures and video folks.
