There are several reasons but here are a few:

1.) People have paid good money for these timetables, a number of whom are either unemployed or on limited incomes right now. Making the timetables available in PDF diminishes the value of the printed copies. I don't want to punish people who wish to sell or trade their used Altamont timetables.

2.) Lots of new Altamont timetables exist on the shelves of hobby stores and railroad museums. These timetables have already been paid for. As long as this is true, releasing PDF versions would be the ultimate insult, especially if I gave the PDF files away for free. Museums and hobby stores need all the sales they can get.

3.) My preference is to hold onto the files for the unlikely possibility Altamont Press can publish timetables again in the future. I don't see this happening, but who knows.

There's no cheap or easy way to control the distribution of PDF files. It would require a lot of time and money to implement and maintain. I might look into this further if I intended to publish new timetables in the future, but as you know, that isn't the case.
