Please note that the Trainnews.org server appears to be "down." So I am posting tonight's Trainnews directly at AP. Espee99 is traveling for a few days, so I am not sure when the Trainnews.org server will be back online.

Editors notes -
When Altamont Press closes, Trainnews will continue to provide a forum for Altamont Press contributors and readers. At this time it is unknown if the Altamont Press database will be available for reference after Altamont Press closes, as more information becomes available I will pass it along.

This day in Railroad History
December 27, 1913
The new, unfinished, 18 story 500,000 sq ft Michigan Central Station replaced the older Central station that burned yesterday. The new station, which cost $15 million, had been planned as part of a large project that included the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel below the Detroit River for freight and passengers. The old station was to be replaced by the new Michigan Central Station to place the passenger service on the main line. On January 6, 1988, the last Amtrak train pulled away from the station after it was decided to close the facility. Amtrak service to Detroit was continued at the new, smaller, Detroit station. The property has changed hands several times after the 1984 deal, once even selling for less than $80,000. Renovation plans are stalled, and there is also an effort to demolish the structure.\
