The key factor at West Sacto is the Port of Sacramento. In the future, you will see unit trains of iron ore and coal being exported, and U.P. isn't about to give this up.

This obviously is terrible news for the local Sierra employees. They worked so hard to undue the neglect of the line by Union Pacific. Union Pacific will get the line back in significantly better condition than they gave it to Sierra Northern two years ago. The Santa Cruz Branch Line was in goods hands under Sierra Northern’s stewardship and the line and the County will be diminished with their leaving.
