Train braking

I remember reading that (some of?) this equipment read both air pressure and movement. The later indicated to the engineer that the train had been stretched completely and higher traction effort could be applied without damaging the cars or the contents. Quite a contrast from earlier days (steam); sometimes it was necessary to compress part or most of a train and then starting the train one car at a time. I remember hearing this method being used. Sure tested load blocking and tiedowns.
