I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
I worked with Dan in the late 90's at Caltrans. He was a very intelligent guy with a very gruff persona. I enjoyed his company, he made coming to work interesting and fun.
He was a heck of a card player, always kept a fat bankroll in his pocket just in case a poker game broke out.
Always looked forward to coming into work on Monday to see how he did on his gambling trips. He was a regular a Bud's Buffet in downtown Sacramento on Mondays. I remember walking in with him, and the guys behind the counter would see him coming and make his usual sandwich without him saying a word. Roast Beef sandwich, extra onions, jalapenos, horseradish, and au jus on the bread.
He loved his food.
