In response to Almo's inquiry, the Espee had paint problems with their last Sacramento rebuilds. The grey paint would not adhere properly to the tan primer, causing large sheets of grey to peel off after a few months. This occurred on the 6800 - series SD-45-T-2 rebuilds.Sort of a leprosy look, not altogether unusual for latter-day Espee power anyway.
The BNSF "Squashes" dated to a 2002 order I believe; most have been repainted by now but as you noted, looks don't affect performance. The 800-series GE's, ex-Santa Fe, are also looking a bit tattered.( Kinda like my 1990 Buick with the peeling paint.)Get yuor photos now...
