Yes, Coleman, you would not recognize the Surf Line today if you haven't been there since 1979. Even where the overall scenery hasn't changed much, like the cliffs south of San Clemente from Calafia Beach to the San Mateo River trestle, there have been subtle changes to signaling, etc. But overall, the route looks much different with new segments of multiple main track, the aforementioned commuter yard at Stuart Mesa, and the urban sprawl that has absorbed what little was left of the old orange groves and farm fields that once lined this route. I have my own questions: Are the daily manifests still the MSDGBAR/MBARSDG, and do they still use DP on the rear? What amount of intermodal, if any, travels the Surf Line? Reason I ask is that back in the 1980s you occasionally saw a short, solid TOFC/COFC train, and at other times there were trailers simply tacked onto the rear of a manifest. My 12-year old son has been adding an intermodal terminal at the port of San Diego on his MSTS Surfliner route, which I was able to only partially justify from my observations of the prototype years ago.
