Speaking of F-M, Fairbanks Morse, the Navy used a lot of them. On ww2 Destroyer Escorts, they were designed to start up and run in both directions. That is how we got forward and reverse on the boat. A big hand operated lever on the engine would be used to shift the fuel pump cams, and pour starting air into the cylinders until the thing started. 10 cyls., opposed pistons in each, 2 crankshafts, 2 fuel pumps and 2 injectors per cylinder. 4 engines. I did have an EMD ships power generator run away, too. Shut off fuel, but blower oil kept it screaming. Overspeed trip didn't work. A piece of deck plating against the air intake duct finally did it. Needed new skivies.
