I myself prefer the Yaesu line as I have several of them including the VX-6R HT radio. What I have here with the except of one were purchased as used at a deep discounted price as compared to buying new. Case in point: I found a FT-7900R listed as used on a website back in Ohio for $125 and so I left it there for about 2 weeks. Went back and found it still listed. Called the store and yes they did indeed still have it. Asked them what was wrong with it besides the "doesn't work" statement listed with the radio. Got the same reply. Called Yaesu service center, got their hourly rate & figured what could possibly be wrong with the radio?? Bought the radio and found out whoever bought it never filled out the warranty card much less mailing it in so the failed radio got repaired for free and the repair cost me just under $55 excluding my shipping cost to the service center.

So for about $175 less my shipping cost, I got a great mobile radio. And Yaesu cut me some "slack on the repairs + free shipping from them to me. Plus factor in that my truck has a mini antenna farm atop it, I can enjoy two hobbies!

I own a FT-8800R for use with my radio club activities & myself when I'm out on a mini road trip as well as the FT-1802M which I now use exclusively as the railfan "watch" radio. Factor in a FT-450AT (bought it used for $650) with a ATAS-120 (bought it used for 1/2 price of new!) and my mini road trips are more enjoyable.

And don't forget about the RT Systems software to computer program the radio!

As for the VX-6R HT radio, I already had a Diamond RH77CA antenna, just needed the SMA adapter and the little radio brings RR talk very well. The HT is also setup for use with my FT-8800R which I se when I'm out for some RR action.....

But it a "work in progress" at my QTH regarding my antenna farm projects!
