Just a disclaimer, I do have a nose.

I will echo the likes of others mentioning of the FT line from Yaesu. I have an older FT50 and a VX150 and they are rock solid to this day.

The VX150 is a favorite of mine as the receive is VERY hot...even up in the railroad band but has good selectivity in the downtown areas rejecting all that nearby RF interference.

You could go with commercial radios as they generally perform / last longer, but those are pricy and a pain if you cant program them.
