CAT has experienced several bouts of labor strife in the past 20+ years, and the company takes an uncompromising stance.
In 1992, the UAW went on a 5-month strike at the Peoria, IL plant, and CAT threatend to replace its entire union workforce.
In 1994, workers went on another 17-month long strike, over contract & wage disputes.
Following that long strike, CAT outsourced or relocted many of its factories, moving operations from Illinois to southern states with generous right-to-work policies.
This latest issue in London, Ontario is impacted by the relative strength of the Canadian dollar vs. the US dollar, over the past few years. In 2000, the ratio was $1 USD to $1.4465 CDN. Today, the 2 currencies are essentially at parity, putting the cost of production Canadian factories at a significant disadvantage compared to their US counterparts.
