EMD also competes with GE which has also built locomotives for China.

This morning, I went to a CVS drug store and was startled to find that all the cash registers in the front were self-serve. I also recently read of a restaurant considering use of computers to replace waiters and waitresses.
As for the government, you haven't been paying attention. State and local government employees comprise a major portion of people who have lost their jobs in the past 2 - 3 years.
