Except that SMART will run on diesel. Expensive and getting more so, though it seems like the "bio" alternatives (becoming marginally cost-effective at least as "stretchers" at $5/gal - I saw B20 advertised prominently in Santa Cruz last week at about $4.50/gal) work better in diesels than they do in gasoline engines. After all, Rudolf designed the original to run on veggie oil, and the modern versions still can. But in the meantime SMART and Caltrain and the other diesel-powered operations take a big hit in the fuel budget -- probably need to slow down and run fewer, fuller trains to compensate.
